Abstract
The employment of Sufi discourse is considered one of the most significant expressive modes in contemporary Arabic poetry, aiming to break the monotony of traditional communicative patterns. Contemporary poets have found in it new spiritual and intellectual horizons through which they enrich and deepen their modern poetic experience with Sufi symbols and meanings.
Omar Jalal al-Din Hazzaʿ (born in 1973) is one of those poets whose poetry has been profoundly influenced by Sufi discourse, particularly in his poetry collection On the Station of Theophany (ʿAlā Maqām al-Tajallī). A reading of this collection reveals that the poet drew inspiration from the Sufi language that ascends toward the heavens and restored it to the origins of its lexical formation.
Using a descriptive and analytical approach, this study seeks to provide a textual examination of the poet’s discourse in On the Station of Theophany through a critical reading of its poems. It investigates the Sufi vision embedded in the collection and the Sufi signifiers artistically employed at the linguistic level, with the aim of uncovering their acquired meanings and clarifying their significance within the contexts in which they appear.
Among the most important findings of the study is that the mystical (gnostic) tendency is manifested in the title of the collection, On the Station of Theophany, as well as in its themes, poetic imagery, symbols, and lexical repertoire, thereby establishing the collection upon an integrated Sufi worldview.
